"Karibu Nairobi: stamped and approved" is a design study that reimagines what it means to document a place honestly; through the tiny, overlooked canvas of postage stamps. when was the last time you really looked at a postage stamp? they used to be tiny storytellers, miniature ambassadors carrying a country's pride, history, and identity across borders. but somewhere along the way, we stopped updating the story. this project asked: what if kenyan stamps reflected our actual reality? not the sanitized, tourist-friendly version, but the Nairobi we live in. Karibu Nairobi: Stamped and Approved asks a simple question with sharp consequences: what happens when a nation’s official image no longer matches the reality its people live? “I was drawn to the stamp because of that gap between official narrative and lived experience.” In this series, Nairobi-based multimedia designer Sinatra Chumo ( @_.sinatra ) reclaims the postage stamp as a site of cultural critique. Once used as miniature ambassadors of national identity, stamps become, in his hands, a way to document the Nairobi that official symbols rarely hold in full, from inequality and political tension to the improvisations that keep the city running. Working within the visual language of mid-century philatelic design, Chumo draws on period typography, distressed textures, archival palettes, and the formal structure of the stamp itself. The works look official, and that is what makes them land, exposing the distance between branded identity and lived experience rather than projecting a polished national myth. For Chumo, the project is not about cynicism but about honesty, about what becomes visible when design stops smoothing things over and starts documenting what is actually there.
