David Sizemore’s latest video “tourniquet” captures the spirt of exploration, it’s full of soul, it’s authentic and what my ideal of skating is.
You could call his tricks textbook, but that is as uniform as it gets. What sets him apart is a highly thoughtful and ingenious way of moving through his environment. A rare ability to read a spot and respond to it on his own terms. But what makes Tourniquet particularly special is how he holds two things in balance simultaneously. He honours the tradition of the craft: the technically demanding, crowd-pleasing tricks that give the sport its foundation and its common language, while pushing into genuinely creative territory without ever losing the viewer along the way.
That balance is one of the hardest things to achieve in blading. Creativity can easily come at the cost of legibility; an unconventional approach to an obstacle can leave even a well versed skater unsure of why it mattered or if it should carry value. David doesn’t have that problem. His creativity is always communicated. The difficulty is felt, the cleverness lands and the impact of the trick is never diluted by the originality of the idea behind it. He brings something new to the table without asking you to change what you already love about skating. Street skating offers a form of turbo self-expression and an escape from the uniformity of skate parks. It’s vast, complex, and full of potential. His skating is never just about the execution of a trick; it is about the idea behind it, the spot it was conceived for, and the intention that holds it all together. Tourniquet presents them with the same care and thoughtfulness he brings to the skating itself. That is what gives the whole thing its soul.
