Martique under the influence of a limited palette. If you’re feeling stuck in the bog of excess, subtract. Try painting with fewer colors. You may be surprised by how engaged and adaptive your mind can be when you’ve removed half your options.

I recently pulled out an old portrait from at least 15 years ago of a good friends sister. She was in town briefly and sat for me for a couple of sessions. It’s a great example of a painting done from life where the composition was neglected. Instead of trying to tackle the composition of the painting, I got caught up in the gesture and detail of the model. There are bits and pieces in this portrait that I love, but it never landed as a whole.
