WATRRS Outreach — Kaneohe to Town to the West
Started today’s outreach early in Kāne‘ohe, where we came across something powerful — our houseless ‘ohana tilling the land and starting a kalo patch, building something sustainable with their own hands. Real resilience. Real aloha in action.
From there we moved to another Kāne‘ohe spot, then headed into town, and finally made our way out to the guard rails on the West Side, checking in on our people all along the way.
Met some solid folks out there who were also doing outreach today. Always good to see more hearts in the community stepping up and putting in the work.
Special mahalo to Keline and Aina for providing the food and snacks that helped fuel this run. Big thanks to Noke Maka @makasakamaimasonryllc for the escort and kōkua in Kāne‘ohe — your support made a real difference. And to the guys we met and worked alongside, even for a brief moment, we appreciate you. Community is stronger when we move together.
One coastline, many hands, one purpose — lift our people.

Repost from @honolulupd
Retirees who use the Tom T. Nekota Gym Complex at Kīlauea District Park are asking the governor to veto a bill that would transfer the City-owned property to the State, saying the change could eliminate their daily programs. This video from Hawaiʻi News Now, text modified for socials w/ more info
The park is packed with activities on weekdays including ping pong, adult dance & aerobics. If Senate Bill 2613 is signed into law, City permits would be void, affecting kūpuna programs during the day and keiki programs after school hours
“I understand the property underneath the schools, but you don’t go taking this away from seniors,” said May Lau who socializes at the park & teaches mahjong
If the governor signs the bill, ownership of the land under dozens of schools would transfer from other agencies to the state Dept. of Education to streamline projects. A House committee amended the original bill to include Kaimukī Middle School and Kīlauea District Park’s gym, rec center, & parking. In a statement, State Rep. Mark Hashem, whose committee added the amendment, said the initial intent was to help repair & maintain the facility without disrupting any programs
“For years, my son (who attends Kaimukī Middle School), constituents, and sports teams have raised concerns about unsafe conditions, including broken bleachers, severe leaks, and collapsing ceiling tiles,” the statement continued. “This facility is finally receiving the attention it deserves, rather than continued inaction, which is both appropriate and necessary.”
While the recreation center & gym need work, the changes Hashem’s committee made to the bill do not mention repairs & do not include funding. Therefore, repairs are not guaranteed
The City’s Parks & Rec Dept., who currently oversee the gym complex, recognize the repairs need to be made and have requested money in the City’s upcoming budget to fix the gym complex’s roofs. This after renovating some 40 park building roofs in the last three years. “We very much treasure this facility and we very much want to keep it within our parks inventory. It’s a vital part of this community from keiki to kūpuna,” said Nate
