Starting from Ziming Peng’s current line of research, this lecture asks what an “image” actually is and why it needs to be rethought today. Taking Aby Warburg’s guiding questions as its point of departure, the lecture follows the shifts, continuities, and transformations of images across history, moving gradually through photography, film, digitization, and 3D computer graphics, and finally to today’s AI generated images. The focus is not only on individual images themselves, but on how the technical conditions behind them, modes of viewing, cultural memory, and lived experience intersect and together shape our visual memory. Through this, we hope to open up some reflections that may help us better understand today’s environment of visual generation, as well as the changes taking place between images, technology, and reality.
Ziming Peng is a cross media artist and PhD candidate at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His artistic practice and research focus on the technical aesthetics and visual mediality of 3D and AI generated images. Working across 3D animation, game engines, media installation, AI generated imagery, and print, he examines the relationship between images, technology, and reality.
