Movie program for ‘The Brown Bunny’ - Cinema Rise No.131 Magazine The film ‘The Brown Bunny’ by director Vincent Gallo is best known for its scandalous premiere at Cannes, where Roger Ebert called it «the worst film in the history of the festival» (unclear why). Spectators demonstratively left the hall and booed the film, and Gallo responded by insulting the critic, calling him a «fat pig,» and even cursed his thick ass. Ebert parried: «Someday I will lose weight, and Gallo will remain the director of ‘The Brown Bunny’.» However, later, after Gallo cut the film by 25 minutes (from 119 to 93 minutes), Ebert reconsidered his assessment and gave it a positive review. Another shocking fact concerns the main scene of the film — oral sex involving Chloë Sevigny and the director himself. The act was not simulated, which the actress confirmed, calling it «the hardest thing she has done in her career.» Notably, Jennifer Jason Leigh originally agreed to this role, including the scene, but refused due to her relationship at the time. Due to the scandal, Sevigny’s agents broke her contract, and she later admitted that she still doubts the correctness of that choice. The film is also known for being shot on 16mm cameras bought from the heirs of Stanley Kubrick, and Gallo personally repainted the motorcycle dozens of times to achieve the desired shade of gold.

It is one of the most commercially successful Mexican films; its domestic box office earnings in its opening weekend set a record of $2.2 million. In total, the film «And Your Mother Too» won more than 30 film awards and prizes, including the award for Best Screenplay and the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the 2001 Venice Film Festival (awarded to the two lead male actors).
