Cinnamon
.
.
My grandmother always smelled of cinnamon. She carried cinnamon gum in her purse, offering it to everyone and anyone because that was her favorite. She bought cinnamon broom sticks for the holiday seasons and she strategically put them around her house. At the front of the door, the back door, the kitchen, the bathrooms. She bought them for my mom and I as well because she believed they were “good luck”.
Cinnamon, around every corner.
I get little glimpses of her, little sprinkles of cinnamon in my life and I’m that 5 year old asking for extra cinnamon on my oatmeal because I hate the taste of oatmeal, but now I LOVE OATMEAL and I ALWAYS put cinnamon on my oatmeal.
Cinnamon made everything better; I drink cinnamon tea in the morning holding the mug to my chest…against my heart. Embracing the warmth, the smell, holding onto her never wanting to finish that mug; but once I do—I pour myself some more never wanting to let her go.
