This is Victor Murphy, he is the earliest documented person to have a lowrider with hydraulics in the city of Compton California and the earliest documented Black Lowrider with Hydraulics in the world as well. In the early 1960’s Victor had his Corvair monza cut for hydraulics by Bill Hines of Lynwood California. We are very thankful to have captured his history on camera, much more on the way from this interview! #46to64#kustom#lowriderhistory#lowrider#lowridermag azine#slammed#stance#jdm#lowriderhydraulics#blackhistory#blackhistorymonth#blacklowriderhistory#Billhines#kustomrama

Known as the “Dukester,” this was legendary Wilmington, California custom car builder and lowrider Allen Duke’s final custom build. Allen was best known for his iconic 1964 Chevy Impala “Bloody Mary” and the beautiful hot rods he built throughout the 1970s. All of Allen’s builds are top notch. 1947 Ford Sedan • 29k miles • 400hp SBC crate engine • TH350 • Air ride • Tubbed & C-notched • Power steering • 4-wheel disc brakes • A/C • Thorley headers w/ custom exhaust & cutouts • One-piece windshield & door glass • Frenched headlights • Frenced taillights • Shaved handles • Custom leather/suede interior • Power windows • Pioneer sound system w/ backup camera. Paint/body by Tom Rodriguez • Interior by Eddie and Son’s • Pinstriping by Kelly and Son $65,000 obo No photo or description can truly do this car justice. We included photos on whitewall tires to show the versatility of the build and different styling options (whitewalls not included). This 1963 Impala was built by Bill Hines around 1965. It had custom candy fadeaway paint by “Nate,” possibly Porkchop, also known as Nathaniel Robinson. It came with Hines frenched antennas, button-tuck upholstery most likely by Eddie Martinez, a mini Sony TV, and fairly new Astro Supreme wheels. The car also has front and rear hydraulic lifts by Hines. NOBODY built more lowrider style cars in the 1960s than Bill Hines of Lynwood, California. After building the 1959 Impala known as the Buddha Buggy in 1962 and installing his first set of hydraulic lifts in that car, the majority of his 1960s custom car customers received hydraulic lifts in their builds. His shop, located on Long Beach Boulevard in Lynwood, was near Compton, Lynwood, and Watts. These areas were home to young Black lowriders who wanted to have their cars lifted with hydraulics and customized by Bill Hines. Next door to Bill’s shop was Eddie Martinez, and numerous lowriders of the 1960s had bodywork and hydraulics by Hines with a Martinez interior. Personally, I believe nobody lit the fire of lowrider style cars more than Bill Hines in the 1960s. He started installing hydraulics in 1962 and was the first documented shop in Los Angeles to do so and had many fully built cars out of his shop. I truly believe he should be included in the museum exhibits of lowrider history, and not including him would be a failure to properly document that history. #kustom#lowrider#lowriderhistory#billhines

I just wanted to share these great photographs sent to me by Eddie Martinez’s family, showing Eddie upholstering the most famous kustom car of all time, the Hirohata Mercury, built by Barris Kustoms. The original upholstery was done by Gaylord Kustom of Lynwood in 1952. One of the workers who originally upholstered the car at Gaylord was named Louis Chavez, and Louis worked with Eddie back in the 1950s. This is a very rare, behind the scenes look at Eddie performing upholstery magic, as well as a rare glimpse of the Hirohata Mercury during the re-build process. These photos were taken at the Park Street shop location in Bellflower, California across from Bill Hines Shop, and at Junior Conway’s shop in Bell Gardens, California. Thank you to the Martinez family for sharing these with me. #kustom#lowrider#hotrod#46to64

After making the post yesterday about the Lowrider newspaper article from Torrance, California in 1971, I decided to dive deeper into the killer 1965 Impala featured in it. The article said the car was owned by Nick Giacobone, an Italian American from Torrance, CA. I remembered seeing a similar custom ’65 Impala in Howard Gribble’s photo collection, and sure enough, it was the same car. In the later show photo, the Impala had evolved with a custom grille, Astro Supreme wheels, and updated paint. I found out Nick graduated from North High School in Torrance in 1968, and just three years later he already had this custom Impala and his own custom shop. Nick later moved from custom cars into customizing Corvettes, then European cars, and eventually opened a very successful limousine company called Executive Coach Works. I also included a 1982 article featuring an interview about the business. Nick passed away in 2017, so unfortunately I’m not able to interview him, but I’m glad this history has been uncovered so his story, and this cool custom lowrider, can still be remembered. #lowrider #impala#lowriderhistory#southbayhistory

I want your help! I’m planning the build of my 1957 Chevy Bel Air, and I’ve got some serious choices to make as I start this journey of building this chariot of extreme lowness. I’m torn between two directions: early 60’s custom style or old school lowrider style. No matter what the car will have hydraulics (not hopping style, just old school low, aircraft.) I value your opinions and want your input on the build, scroll through the slides and let me know in the comments which direction you’d go 👇 #kustom #lowrider #hotrod #oldschoollowrider

Lowrider history runs deep in South Bay Los Angeles. Here’s an article from the Torrance Daily Breeze newspaper August 15th 1971. The piece features custom painter Ronnie Sowers of Redondo Beach, and the cover photo shows a custom 1965 Impala lowrider owned by Nick Giacabone wearing Buick wires and a flake paint job. The Buick Riviera in the background looks similar to Mike Smith’s Riviera, “Lemon Drop.” The article, written by Jeffrey Hansen, is an interesting period piece, clearly from the perspective of someone observing the scene from the outside and not fully connected to the deeper roots of Lowriders at the time or fully understanding the origins. Still, it’s a fascinating snapshot of how lowriding was being seen in the early 1970s and a reminder that South Bay played an important role in custom car history #lowrider#kustom#southbayhistory#lowriderhistory

I broke the main rule of buying a car. But I think I came out pretty good in the end. This is my “new” 1957 Chevy Bel Air 2 door hardtop. Follow along the journey of me bringing this car back to life as a mid 1960’s style kustom/lowrider. Can’t wait to show you the next phase which is installing a motor and transmission. #kustom#lowrider#lowriders#hotrod#1957chevybelair
