“Bang” consists of a shooting-game target that the artist herself has shot through using a toy gun with BB pellets, subsequently presented as an artwork. The piece is fixed in place by magnetic spheres: the installer randomly drives nails or pins into the wall, places the work on top, and secures it with the magnets. As a result, the holes already made by the artist and those newly made by the installer in the act of installation appear simultaneously, producing a doubled image. For Murata, who works with photography and is not a native English speaker, the word “shoot” has always felt somewhat peculiar: encountered through academic study of photographic theory and practice. At the same time, she feels a certain fatigue toward the saturated condition in which such linguistic dissonances are readily appropriated as artistic meaning within the context of art. Introducing our participating artist represented by 4649, Yusuke Abe: Yusuke Abe was born in Yamagata, Japan, and currently lives and works in Saitama. Centered on painting, his practice combines oil and spray painting while incorporating various heterogeneous materials such as plastic, cards, video game software, and wood. Through collage and layering, these elements form complex compositions that exist between the flatness of painting and the presence of relief. Abe’s work draws largely from personal memories and formative experiences. Childhood activities in nature—such as fishing and collecting insects—alongside video games, card games, and the unconscious doodles left in the corners of notebooks and textbooks, frequently reappear as visual motifs. Insects, fish, and monster-like characters often populate his paintings. Abe has noted that in his work these motifs are “completely equal in existence” to a casual line drawn with a brush. Just as insects inhabit grasslands, fish live in water, and monsters belong to the worlds of trading cards or video games—each existing according to the rules of its own environment—this perspective gradually led him to realize that humans likewise live within the limited framework of what we call the “human world.” Yusuke Abe Sometimes appear from the bushes 2019 Oil, paper, ink, coupy-pencil, oil pastel, pencil, pencil cap, eraser, clear case, card sleeve, Animal Crossing card, Gameboy Color, glue on wood panel 42 x 33 cm Yusuke Abe Ancient lake 2021 Oil, paper, ink, coupy-pencil, plastic board, canvas, glue on wood panel 46 x 38 cm Yusuke Abe Live through the side ditch 2024 Oil, charcoal, ink, coupy-pencil, paper, gesso, gel medium, hologram sheet, resin on canvas 33.5 x 24 cm

The only thing I can’t stand about China is how bicycles and electric silent scooters run around at fast speeds on the sidewalk, but other than that, Shenzhen might just be my favorite place I’ve ever visited. By the way, we are showing the works by Emi Mizukami and Yusuke Abe at the “So Shenzhen” art fair, opening today, held at the Shenzhen Sea World Culture and Arts Center. It’s close to Hong Kong so please do stop by. 2026 So~Shenzhen!
