With support from @huruf.my , we successfully held a one-day workshop on 30th September. While it was advertised as beginner-friendly, the actual requirements were quite demanding: participants needed a basic understanding of Hanzi characters, proficiency in vector design software, and pre-installed Glyphs. In the morning, everyone introduced themselves, and @colourphilosophy shared the history of 3type, our foundational research on Chinese character design, and some core conceptual principles. In the afternoon, participants began drawing characters in Glyphs. @l_everee demonstrated how to use our Smart Glyph templates to efficiently produce and assemble a large number of characters. Even after the workshop concluded, discussions about Chinese typography continued enthusiastically. We’ll look at how generations of designers made unconscious yet consistent choices when shaping Hanzi, and unpack three core principles of Chinese type design. 🌙 Afternoon – Hands-on practice. Participants will set up essential metrics and rules for building a font, and (time permitting) explore characters of different structures and complexity. We’ll also share a Smart Glyphs template for Glyphs, making assembly much faster. ⚡️ The goal is to understand the fundamental logic of Hanzi design and learn how to build your own typeface system. 👩‍💻 Requirements: – Basic familiarity with Hanzi, graphic design & typography – MacBook labtop with @glyphsapp installed ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Li Zhiqian is a researcher, writer, translator, curator and designer on typography, visual cultural and art.
