This is very full circle for me after studying in Maastricht on a year abroad whilst studying Law I met some of the most amazing people from all around the world we all met in a borderline right wing town in the south of a country that doesn’t recognize Blackface as a thing. This experience truly changed me for the better and I’m so grateful to have been able to meet so many amazing Black people in such a remote and often times draining area and so happy I get to go back to the meeting point I would travel through every few months to play at one of my fave venues x
The Netherlands often gets forgotten in the conversation on the slave trade however their genocide and human trafficking is documented leading to a large population of Caribbean / South American and South African diaspora based in the main cities a sound that’s reflected and preserved in communities across the country making it a meeting point for so many minds - plz check out curated culture magazine who document these stories through their online zines :

Nijmegen based artist, Akunna has been rapping and producing trap music for several years. Starting off with only rap, Akunna moved from being more classic sample based hip hop artist to a more experimental and modern sound, incorporating dark and moody atmospheres with heavy 808s and razing autotuned vocals. Eventually discovering a passion for producing dance music through the influences of his brother, Gqom already fit into his sound. After learning the basics of from other notable DJ’s like Chinnamasta, Akunna began DJing at parties usually back to back with Rav Fasi learning with him on the fly and getting better all while producing Gqom and various other styles of african dance music. Akunna likes to mix underground trap with Gqom, sampling or looping vocals and melodies, layering them with loud 808 infused Gqom rhythms creating unique but instantly recognizable sound.
