FEW OF OUR MODELS FEATURED IN ;
✨AMA’S SALON✨
What if braid-ups could heal us? What if our traditional beauty rituals could reconfigure memory, spark joy, or awaken courage? Are the risks of accessing intimate brain data worth the cure of mental health?
Set in the year 2056, this speculative project imagines an African hair salon as a site of healing, resistance, and transformation using the BRAID2BRAIN Interface, a cutting edge technology pioneered by a hair braider and neurotechnologist named Ama. Braid patterns are used to redirect neural pathways and shift emotional states. This project weaves Afrofuturism into feminist community-based care, exposing the imminent risk of surveillance of our most intimate thoughts.
This series of 13 artworks are debuting at the African Feminisms Gathering 2025 at @goetheinstitut_southafric in Johannesburg this week.
