Yesterday, the Central Criminal Investigation Department (DCIAP) carried out a series of raids on current and former members of the Portuguese government, concerning deals related to mining and green hydrogen. This led to the resignation of António Costa, the Portuguese Prime Minister. The police actions that took place yesterday make it clear that the suspicions of local movements and associations have always been legitimate. This is why we demand: the immediate cancellation of all lithium mining projects in Portugal, whether they are in the prospecting, evaluation or exploration phase. The promotion of lithium extraction in Portugal by António Costa’s government, is not due to any ecological and/or climate concern, but rather to the creation of a network of business opportunities to benefit a very few. We also take this opportunity to call on the various political parties to join the anti-mining movements and challenge the mining projects in Barroso, as well as the Mining Development Plan currently being implemented. This week G.I.T launches its first film project: Montanha Invertida [Inverted Mountain]. We made it to support the struggle against the planned open pit lithium mine in Covas de Barroso, Northern Portugal. Through 3D modelling and cartographic analysis, we reveal some of the destruction this mine would bring, to the region and further afield. Made in collaboration with people living and working in the region, we visualise some of the oversights and risks buried in the environmental impact assessments and mining plans. 300 leaflets on the environmental impacts of lithium mining developed by @2_3_1000_git in collaboration with @dayanalucas , made their presence felt in the 'burial of savannah' a powerful demonstration organised by local communities and environmentalist movements in Boticas, north of Portugal, this summer!
