Hi y’all. It’s early on the morning of Wednesday, November 19, 2025. I bought a Yamaha TW200 motorcycle last Sunday, and yesterday I crashed in my neighborhood. There were no other vehicles involved… I was going too fast. I used my front brake around a corner and slid on some leaves. I fell on my left side. It was the first time I had driven the motorcycle without a jacket on. I was wearing gloves and a helmet, boots and long pants, but my arms weren’t covered.
The wages of this and other reckless choices are the following: road rash on my left arm, road rash on my left knee, six fractured ribs, and a broken collarbone. Because of the fractured ribs, there was air in my abdomen, which was keeping my left lung from inflating fully, so they had to install a chest tube to allow the air to escape. The doctor said that was a relatively short and simple surgery, and I’m sure to them it was. However, my experience under ketamine sedation was very different — not wholly unpleasant, just extremely interesting — and I’ll never forget it. The chest tube pretty much immediately helped me breathe more easily. So this morning, I’m just dealing with abdominal pain from the fractured ribs and some discomfort from whatever is happening with my collarbone. I’m to see an orthopedist this morning.
So that’s basically it. I’ll have to miss at least some of the
@bigbillband shows this week. It might be hard to play bass. A big thank you to
@spamkey for filling in on short notice. I’m disappointed, but grateful that I wasn’t hurt worse. And I really appreciate all the folks who have taken care of me in the last 24 hours. For them, it’s their day-to-day. For me, it’s a pivotal experience.
Thank you all for your kind messages and comments. I’m feeling pretty good considering my situation. The hospital bed is comfortable and the meds are helping. I just try not to move too much. I’m in room 771 at Dell Seton downtown if you’re bored today.
Maybe I’ll see y’all at Bill Ball at
@radioeastaustin on Saturday?
