Common beginner mistake: Drawing characters too rigid. ✏️ Example: if a character is sitting, they'll draw them sitting very straight with their back up against the chair.—Just as stiff as the chair itself! 😑
But no one sits that way! A straight, stiff pose doesn't convey the character's attitude or personality at all. It doesn't tell a story. ❌️

Don't spend hours repainting your artwork! 😩 @lplucas
I used to do this all the time... sadly.
I'd jump right into painting without a clear plan. Just pick a color, see how it feels. Pick the next one, keep going.
By the time the piece was half done, nothing fit together, and I couldn't tell why.
Turns out I was doing the whole thing backwards.
You can't figure out a palette while you are painting. The canvas is too big, the time investment is too much, and by the time something feels off, you've already wasted half a day.
What actually works is testing tiny! 🤏
Shrink your sketch way down, duplicate it a few times, and just block in flat colors as fast as you can. It feels too quick to be useful, which is exactly why it works. You're not committing to anything yet.
The other thing nobody tells beginners: be willing to try a palette that doesn't make sense to you. The version you'd normally skip is usually the one that ends up surprising you.
Then squint at all of them. Whichever one still reads clearly when your eyes are blurry is the one to use.
A few minutes of testing up front instead of hours of fixing later.

Flatting means filling in all the base colors with clean, solid fills, like a digital coloring book. No shading or details yet.
Why this step makes digital art WAY easier:
✅ Ease of Selection:
When each part of your drawing (like the hair, skin, or shirt) is filled with a flat color, you can click on it easily with selection tools. This lets you add shadows and highlights faster later on.
✅ Non-Destructive Editing:
Made the shirt blue, but want it green? No problem! If your flat colors are on their own layers, you can slide the color controls to change them fast anytime, saving hours of repainting!
✅ Color Inside the Lines:
Filling everything with flat colors first makes sure there are no empty spots. Then, when you shade, the color won’t leak into the wrong areas.
Even though it’s an extra step, flat colors make digital coloring easier, faster, and way more fun!

🥜 Use a bean shape to draw the torso FIRST. Why?
The torso is the center of the body. Drawing this first gives you a better idea of where all the other parts will be positioned.
This is especially helpful when drawing a character within a scene. It helps to ensure the character is the correct size in relation to other elements.
How to draw the torso bean:
1️⃣ Draw 2 circles with a cross in the middle of each. The cross indicates the direction the body is facing.
2️⃣ Connect the circles with a curved line. The top circle is the chest. The bottom circle is the pelvis.

Here's the method:
✏️ Draw a pentagon for the palm
✏️ Middle finger goes at the top point
✏️ Wrist sits at the base
✏️ Palm height = middle finger length (on average)
✏️ Fingers and knuckles follow the sloping edges of the pentagon
✏️ Block the fingers in as a mitten first, then separate them
✏️ Open hand? The fingers fan into an arc. That arc shows you exactly where every joint lands.
No more guessing. These are proportions that actually work!
