We had a blast celebrating endangered species with RWP Zoo today, focusing on our frog friends. Check out the new insect exhibit! May 30th 15MFT will be performing as the Insect Orchestra as part of PorchFest at 28 Observatory Rd. Providence.
Save the date! July 29th 6 p.m. at Farm Fresh, Providence we will officially reveal our Woonasquatucket Watershed Community Quilt featuring local flora, fauna, and funga by nearly 50 artists, followed by a super Pechakucha. (If you are one of the artists, expect an email update this week.)
We got to work with over 200 stidents at the Watershed Explorers Conference with the Narragansett Bay Commission. Our tables focused on preventing water pollution and our native turtle species. Many more community partners joined the fun. Thanks Cynthia for making this event such a success!
Shout out to our Nuestros Bosque interns who presented on botanist and wool mill owner Stephen Thayer Olney, who contributed to science and donated over 3000 dried plant specimens to Brown University. But history is complicated - mills like his often dumprd lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury into the river when dyeing wool. Legumes like lupines, indigo, even black locust trees can chelate lead and cadmium. Remember you shouldn't eat plants from contaminated soil! Great job on the mural and sharing your knowledge!
This Friday we have our first caterpillar survey! We're already up to 48 species of moths and butterflies. Meet at Riverside Park at 3 o'clock to help look under leaves. No experience necessary.
Getting ready to plant at Riverside Park on Aleppo St. in Olneyville. It's remarkably peaceful here... Thanks to Bloom RI, RI Wild Plant Society, 401 Gives, WRWC, and YOU for making this possible!! Join us 9 a.m. today until it's done or one of the four other events tied to this planting in May, June, July, and August. Check our website calendar for details.
Come see the mural about botanist Stephen Thayer Olney in Olneyville! Created by Nuestris Bosques teen interns. Learn about local history and plants while exploring the hidden garden space. Seeds, soil, and pots available!
