⚡ What’s next isn’t something we wait for, it’s something we create together. To explore Next Frontiers of how culture, science, technology, business, politics, and design will shape the future of our societies, 1014 filled physical and imaginary spaces last week with big ideas, bold questions, and the kind of energy that reminds you the future isn’t some far-off destination—it’s something that starts with us, building it together right here, right now. From rethinking “old” spaces to imagining new worlds (and a few journeys beyond this one 🚀), the conversations with our experts and guests challenged assumptions and sparked what comes next. Thank you to our brilliant speakers, partners, and everyone who brought the curiosity, imagination, and momentum to help build it with us. As technology blurs the boundaries between physical and digital space, storytelling is becoming storyliving. In immersive environments, audiences no longer observe — they participate. On May 8th at 4:30 PM during Day II of the Next Frontiers symposium, explore how experiential design, spatial storytelling, and emerging technologies are redefining how we gather, connect, and imagine together, engaging all senses and triggering emotions such as empathy. In an era of rapid change, shared experience becomes cultural infrastructure for the next frontier. On Day II of Next Frontiers symposium at 2:30 PM, you are invited to reflect on the responsibilities — and possibilities — of leadership in a world that is once again being redefined. Inspired by the spirit of renewal and global engagement that defined President John F. Kennedy’s “New Frontier” speech, The Next Frontier and New Realities: Leadership in a Multipolar World explores what political leadership looks like in an increasingly multipolar world. Saskia Brechenmacher of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Steven E. Sokol of the American Council on Germany bring deep expertise on democracy, trans-Atlantic relations, and global governance to a timely discussion on how leaders can navigate these challenges. What does principled leadership require in an era without a single dominant power center? How can democratic values be advanced amid rising geopolitical tensions? And what lessons, if any, can be drawn from past moments of transformation like the early 1960s? This event is co-hosted by the American Council on Germany Thank you to our program co-hosts and partners, the ACG, DWIH, and the University of Cologne New York Office, as well as to Vitra for generously hosting us for our opening reception and keynote. Thank you also to Campus OWL, Deutsches Haus at NYU, Goethe-Institut New York, Heidelberg University Association, UAS7, and UA Ruhr North America for your support.

As the United States celebrates 250 years of democratic and economic development, the spirit of the Next Frontiers call, not only for technological exploration and scientific advancement but also, for bold thinking about how capital is mobilized to meet the defining challenges of our time. Join us at 1:00 PM on Day II of the Next Frontiers symposium for a conversation with Daniel Levine, Founder and Managing Partner of Tenfore Holdings, as we explore how capital markets and investors are evolving to meet the demands of a changing world. The program, introduced and moderated by Andrew Sollinger, CEO & publisher of Foreign Policy, will highlight finance not merely as an economic mechanism, but as a defining frontier of the 21st century—one in which the United States and Germany continue to collaborate in pursuit of shared prosperity and global stability. With the Moon as a testing ground for a new space race, how are norms and rules being shaped in real time? Can existing legal frameworks keep pace with commercial ambitions, geopolitical interests, and technological breakthroughs? Who has the right to extract, benefit, and profit from space resources—and how are those benefits shared? And as we expand further into space, can it remain a global commons, or is competition for access and ownership already reshaping the rules? Explore these very questions at 11:45 AM on Day II of 1014’s Next Frontiers symposium with Stephan Hobe (Director of the Institute for Air Law, Space Law and Cyber Law and Chair for Public Internation Law, European Law, European and International Economic Law at the University of Cologne) and Dr. Gioia Rau (The Catholic University of America)! As activity in space accelerates—from satellite constellations to lunar missions, resource extraction, and exploration beyond Earth—who sets the rules, and who stands to benefit? In this conversation, space law expert Stephan Hobe and astrophysicist Gioia Rau discuss controversial perspectives on governance and discovery to unpack spaceas a scientific frontier, as well as an emerging economic and political sphere. Reserve your seat at the link in our bio! Join us at 10:30 AM on Day II of the Next Frontiers symposium for The Internet of Animals: How Wildlife Can Help Forecast Disasters, Disease, and Environmental Change! The collective wisdom of the Earth’s animals provides an immense bio-treasure of unprecedented information for humankind. Learning from animals in the “Internet of Animals” can help us predict natural catastrophes, forecast global zoonotic disease spreads, or safeguard food resources while monitoring in situ every corner of the planet. The ICARUS initiative, an international bottom-up, science-driven technology development of small, cheap and autonomous IoT (Internet of Things) sensing devices for animal movement and behavior is aiming towards this: wearables for wildlife. The resulting big data available in the open-source data base Movebank helps understand, monitor, predict and protect life on our planet. Featuring Martin Wikelski (Director of the Department of Migration of the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and Honorary Professor at the University of Konstanz) Register at the link in our bio! Everyone wants a better future. Few know how to create one. Join us on May 8th at 8:30 AM for the Day II opening keynote, as Frederik G. Pferdt, Author, former Google Chief Innovation Evangelist, invites you into a simple but powerful shift: your future doesn’t begin somewhere ahead. It begins within you. Drawing on his work at Google, Stanford, and with leaders around the world, Frederik introduces a future-ready mindstate that reshapes how you see uncertainty, decide, and act. Instead of waiting for clarity, you’ll learn to move with it. Instead of following trends, you’ll begin creating what’s next. This is not about predicting the future. It’s about practicing how to shape it—through small, intentional choices that bring your better tomorrow to life. Followed by a Future Visions discussion, featuring Frederik Pferdt and Christina von Messling (Foresight Factory London). Moderated by Felix Zeltner (Award winning journalist and Founder at Remote Daily) Register at the link in our bio! Doors open at 8:15 AM Thank you to our program co-hosts and partners, the ACG, DWIH, and the University of Cologne New York Office, as well as to Vitra for generously hosting us for our opening reception and keynote. Thank you also to Campus OWL, Deutsches Haus at NYU, Goethe-Institut New York, Heidelberg University Association, and UA Ruhr North America for your support.

We are honored to open the 1014 Next Frontiers symposium with a keynote by Sir David Chipperfield. At a moment of rapid change, Sir David Chipperfield’s work offers a vital perspective on architecture as a profound social and cultural responsibility. This keynote will explore the careful transformation of existing buildings, particularly the work on 1014 Fifth Avenue, positioning renovation and adaptive reuse as essential strategies for our collective future. Such thoughtfully reimagined spaces become the necessary vessel for the cultural, scientific, and artistic frontiers for the coming decades. Join us as we redefine the boundaries of the built environment, committing to an architectural philosophy where the most sustainable building is often the one that already exists. 🔗 Join the waitlist by visiting the link in our bio! New Spaces. Creative Thinking. Shared Futures. 💫 The 1014 Next Frontiers symposium is a trans-Atlantic exploration of how culture, science, tech, business, politics, and design will shape our collective future. As the U.S. marks its 250th anniversary in 2026, it reflects a defining national characteristic: the relentless drive to look forward. Our journey is inspired by a legacy of visionary leadership. At the core stands John F. Kennedy’s “New Frontier” speech, which challenged the nation to embrace a spirit of innovation and social progress, emphasizing that the pursuit of new frontiers is essential to national and human advancement. This theme of renewal was later echoed by Ronald Reagan, who described a nation continually strengthened by the aspirations of people from “every corner of the world” carrying us toward ever-new horizons. Today, this shared “American Spirit” continues to bridge the U.S. and Germany. For 80 years, our nations have navigated new frontiers together—from post-war reconstruction to modern technological exchange. Join us as leading experts from both sides of the Atlantic explore the next frontiers of global progress. Part I of the symposium will take place on May 7 & 8, 2026 and Part II is scheduled for the fall 2026. ‼️To learn more about the symposium’s programming, see our dynamic line-up of speakers, and register, visit the link in our bio! Last night, experts Brendan Higgins, Associate Professor of Biosystems Engineering at Auburn University; Shanon Morris, Chief Program Officer of Harlem Grown and author; and Gina Lovasi, Dana and David Dornsife Dean and professor of Epidemiology at Drexel University’s Dornsife School of Public Health, joined us to discuss how food deserts can develop, evolve, and be alleviated. Through breaking down the varying definitions of food deserts, we quickly understood that it is not by chance that we have food deserts, and it won’t be by chance that they go away either. 💭 Some food for thought: 🚮 Loss happens all the time for different reasons but, through education, people can learn how to make and grow food, and stretch it, in an exciting and culturally relevant way 🍽️ The concept of food only being a source of supplying your body with nutrients in the most efficient way possible is part of convenience culture, and ultimately separates you from how that food got to your plate 📢 As consumers, we have a large role to play in articulating what we need and want in our communities to combat growing food deserts—voting for food forward policy and showing up for your community directly vocalizes these needs 🩹 Food banks and other food-related non-profit organizations are just a Band-Aid; the government now has to step in and make comprehensive, permanent systems to reach more people in need 🥪 Food deserts lead to fighting back in creative ways—which is how the NYC bodega was born! Ultimately as community members, we have to decide what we value, in order to decide what is put into initiatives, and it is going to matter whose voice is in the conversation when looking at upward trends for public health. Thank you to our wonderful experts for shedding light on this multifaceted and growing issue, and providing us with tools and hope to move forward with. 📸: @matthewgilbertson

Richtfest at 1014 Fifth Avenue — what a moment. 🏗️ Last Friday, the German Consulate in New York and its construction agency, Bundesbau Baden-Württemberg, brought together everyone behind the project — builders, craftsmen, architects, planners, partners, and neighbors — to celebrate a major milestone: the completion of the new exterior. The Richtfest is one of those traditions with real meaning. A topping-out tree on the roof (or on the scaffolding!), ceremonial speeches, and then coming together over food and drink — all to say thank you, to mark progress, and to wish the building (and everyone connected to it) good fortune. This one felt especially important. A huge thank you from us at 1014 to: ❄️ The construction teams for pushing through freezing winter months and tough site conditions, and the final sprint to get the windows in just in time; 👏 The planning teams for keeping everything on track, on budget, and at the highest standards; 🏛️ The Consulate General in New York, representing the Federal Republic of Germany as the owner, for their tireless support and oversight in moving the project forward. With the exterior complete, 1014 now enters its next phase — bringing to life a beautiful interior that reflects over 100 years of trans-Atlantic legacy, while opening the space for modern use. We can’t wait to see this historic building fully restored. ➡️ On to the next chapter!
