A few days ago, we arrived in Canfranc Estacion - the village of the World Mountain and Trailrunning Championships 2025. We were really surprised to find such a vibrant and well maintained village at the end of the valley. The 5 star hotel that is located in the former station building only opened its doors in 2023. This majestic building that is almost 250m long dominates the scene. When you enter the place not from the main road, but by train, you can guess that this location was a lost place until a few years ago: there are a lot of buildings without roof and countless train wagons that have been out of use for a long time.
After celebrating its inauguration in 1928, the station of Canfranc served as an important railway route through the Pyrenees between Spain and France.
The Spanish installed tracks that were broader than the ones common in Europe. This meant that no train could pass Canfranc. On one side of the station, French trains ended as did the Spanish ones on the other side. All transported goods had to be transferred here from one train to another.
After the second world war, the railway route was used less because maintanance was so expensive. When two trains collided on the French side and damaged a bridge beyond repair in 1970, the railway route was closed. The station in Canfranc decayed until the local government bought the station and renovated it, also with the financial help of the EU. There are plans to rebuild the French side of the tracks, but so far only trains from Zaragossa end in Canfranc-Estation.
