Hong Kong designer Sauwun Cheng unpacks the tension between the True Self and False Self in “Who You…?”, a conceptual collection developed at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, School of Fashion and Textiles. Inspired by Dr. Winnicott’s psychoanalytic theory, the project explores how structural garments can embody our raw authenticity and the protective masks we wear, reminding us that identity is never singular, but a layered negotiation of who we are and who we choose to be. BA Graduation Collection “Who You…?” / Look 2 This look centers on the innovative construction of the coat, where a cropped blazer is subtly embedded within a long overcoat—symbolizing the unnoticed emergence and evolution of the “false self” as it quietly matures. The ensemble is paired with a pleated midi-skirt, its structured folds playing with perception, cleverly mimicking the silhouette of trousers for a deceptive yet elegant effect. BA Graduation Collection “Who You…?” / Look 03: Presentation Two - Separation This look physically manifests the psychological tension between our true and false selves through its transformative construction. Designed to be worn by two people simultaneously, the ensemble features three interconnected blazers that create a unified silhouette—symbolizing the coexistence of dual identities. In the first presentation, three blazers are linked together, which unites a dark brown blazer, a light grey blazer, and a transitional patchwork blazer, blending both hues and textures to depict the inner conflict. In the second presentation, the middle blazer is detached and is worn on the back of the dark brown piece, reflecting how facades eventually recede to reveal authenticity. Complementing this narrative, the double-layered pants feature an adjustable belt system that allows wearers to sculpt the silhouette, mirroring how we consciously shape our external presentation. The convertible design invites endless reconfiguration, celebrating identity as fluid rather than fixed.
