A little insight into some of my favourite pages of my book +237 My working title of the theory was “Reindigenization as a countermovement to the assimilation of migrant parents”. My motivation was my and my fathers story and to dive deeper into what was intentionally/ involuntarily or forcefully left behind. The idea was besides exploring my personal background, to study how it’s also part of a broader perspective and related to many other afro diasporian stories and to understand the social and political background behind them. It was definitely a challenge to pick such a personal and delicate topic for my thesis but at the same time it was important to me to work on something meaningful, worthwhile and touching. The result besides the theory was my book “+237” as the design work, which is a collection of my research in form of a visual diary. - A journal, dictionary, recipe book, photo album, family tree, cartography all in one. . . . #heritage #culture #afrodiaspora #research #explorationofself #cameroun #bts #process #identity #reindigenize #decolonize #journal

𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓱 - 𝓑𝓪𝓯𝓲𝓪 The challenge of learning a non colonial language As in my case, the usual resources that can help with learning a language, such as textbooks, dictionaries, online resources or language courses etc., are often not available for indigenous languages. Even learning from native speakers in my family, was very difficult. Because Bafia, like many other indigenous languages, took place exclusively in oral exchange in my family and the orthography and the associated alphabet were never taught. (…) So I tried to decipher over 75 voice notes from my grandmother in Bafia and thought about the spelling by ear before, fortunately, a relative in Yaoundé was able to translate my selected vocabulary from French into Bafia in writing. It’s not much but these pages represent my learning efforts and I’m very proud to have this little dictionary. 💫 #indigenouslanguages #africanlanguages #poweroflanguage #extinctionoflanguage #reindigenize #decolonize

A little insight into my Book „+237“, an artistic exploration of origin and identity. My fathers archival photos might be my favorite pages of my book, they are a true treasure and very dear to my heart. They are a valuable resource for capturing past moments and cultural memories and serve as visual documentation to preserve knowledge. The use of different visual manipulations and forms of falsification are intended to visually reflect the left behind and equally distorted memories. The cut out elements are a visual representation of a gap and a missing connection. It is a metaphor for the absence of a particular person, who has distanced themself from a situation/ a community/ society.(…) The blur effect represents the gradual disintegration of memories as they lose sharpness and clarity over time. By gradually removing the blur from my family portrait I work through these memories that have been pushed into the background. . . . #237 #archives #oldphotographs #journalentry #heritage #culture #migration #research #explorationofself #cameroun #process #identity #reindigenize #decolonize #powerofmemory #remembering
