Happy Birthday Kris Bowers @krisbowersmusic ! 🎂❤️
One of the most talented people I know, is also one of the kindest. Composer, pianist and filmmaker, Kris has a magical way of making every interaction joyful and every creative contribution to exceed expectation. Our music reviews on @thewildrobot were my favorite part of the entire process as Kris would routinely present one incredibly happy surprise after another. We would always leave those sessions beaming.
One of my favorite aspects of how Kris scored that film, was in his use of musical motifs or themes for each character that he expertly used in different keys or arrangements throughout the film. It is a style modeled after Kris’s musical hero (and also my favorite composer) John Williams, and Kris’s scores embody the same musical authenticity and invention that Williams’s scores do.
The first piece of music Kris wrote for The Wild Robot, was also one of the most challenging: the moment deep into the film in which Roz sends Brightbill off on his first migration - a moment filled with unspoken emotion, unresolved relationships and pure cinematic spectacle. Kris felt that cracking that key moment first would inform the rest of the score, and he was absolutely right. That cue, “I Could Use a Boost’ is the musical and emotional pinnacle of the film.
My favorite Kris Bowers scores:
The Wild Robot
The Last Repair Shop (which he also directed)
Mrs. America
Bridgerton
Green Book
King Richard
The Color Purple
