I got to see some pretty amazing places this last year on the road that I’d had on my list for quite a while, but this ranks as a favorite! I knew about it for years, but there’s nothing like seeing something this beautiful in person, created by a real artist and craftspeople and a dream and true imagination in a beautiful location in front of a forest surrounded by trees, just beyond the ocean. To me, it’s far better than inputting something into a computer with prompts that will only exist on a screen. Give me real things touched by human hands any day - the perfect imperfection that a computer could never create. I get that you can make pretty things in minutes through AI, you don’t even have to know how to draw or build anything, and you only have to collab with an inanimate object with no emotions. But you’ll never remember the feeling of the sea breeze on your skin, or the afternoon fog rolling in, or the weight of the doors, or the way that the light filters in through the stained glass in different places all day long, or the perfect silence of standing in the middle of a place you’ve dreamed about, looking up, taking it all in, capturing it, knowing that someone followed their dream, or someone else’s dream, and built something for other people to experience. I get to spend my life surrounded by real art and artists and musicians and music and words and ideas and the people who create them, and it’s a life filled with color and beauty and creativity and human emotion and so much love and inspiration and adventure. It’s not always easy, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I’ll be dreaming about these doors for the rest of my life and future me will definitely be trying to recreate something inspired by them at some point somewhere magical. Until then, I’ll sit in our rent controlled townhouse the middle of the city surrounded by color and collections and things made by loved ones and dream about our next adventure.
