1E - An artist who hacks art-making: Weaving a portrait of the 21st century from a random array of countless images Did you know that the images and text data you see on the Internet are automatically left behind? The pictures that are posted all over the room are pictures from websites that Evan viewed on his computer. Pointing the similarities between the two pursuits in their fundamental capacity to completely alter our surroundings, Roth applies the notion of the hack into art making. “ Since You Were Born” is one of his Internet Cache Self Portrait series, ongoing since 2012, which utilizes images stored in his computer's cache. In this immersive installation, images stored since the birth of his second daughter present a new form of self-portrait. This gallery, which appears as a flood of images may give you a feeling of looking through someone else's diary or even a photo album on a smartphone. ◆Featured Artists Daisuke Ida / Xu Bing / Trevor Paglen / Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze, Hito Steyerl, Miloš Trakilović / Maiko Jinushi / Tina Enghoff / Jeamin Cha / Evan Roth / Natsuko Kiura ◆Universal / Remote Period: March 6 (Wed), 2024 – June 3 (Mon), 2024 Venue: The National Art Center, Tokyo / Special Exhibition Gallery 1E #UniversalRemote #国立新美術館 #NACT #thenationalartcenteroftokyo 「遠距離現在 Universal / Remote」2024 年 国立新美術館 展示風景 Installation view of the exhibition “Universal / Remote” The National Art Center, Tokyo, 2024

1E - BALENCIAGA for the fashion elite, BELANCIEGE for the working class: Interpreting the current sociopolitical climate in light of the “Balenciaga Method” This entire gallery is one work of art, with a vortex-shaped blue stage, three monitors, bones and wings attached to the ends of stands, and the word “BELANCIEGE” written on the wall. All day long on social networking service and on the Internet, people who seem to be famous are talking about their favorite brands and hot fashions. For whom is this communication for, and where does it lead to? Hito Steyerl “Mission Accomplished: Belanciege” was initially presented online as a digital lecture delivered by the three artists and was later reconfigured as a physical installation. It is a journey through the landscape of capitalism, continuously showcasing disparities that have unfolded over the three decades since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. ◆Featured Artists Daisuke   Ida / Xu Bing / Trevor Paglen / Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze, Hito Steyerl,   Miloš Trakilović / Maiko Jinushi / Tina Enghoff / Jeamin Cha / Evan  Roth / Natsuko Kiura   ◆Universal / Remote Period: March 6 (Wed), 2024 – June 3 (Mon), 2024 Venue: The National Art Center, Tokyo / Special Exhibition Gallery 1E #UniversalRemote #国立新美術館 #NACT #thenationalartcenteroftokyo 「遠距離現在 Universal / Remote」2024 年 国立新美術館 展示風景 Installation view of the exhibition “Universal / Remote” The National Art Center, Tokyo, 2024

What’s more, these aren’t just any old seats—they’re all showpieces of furniture design. Among the highlights are modernist lounge chairs by the Danish master Hans J. Wegner, and understated black leather benches by fellow Dane Poul Kjærholm. Kjærholm’s comfortable creations line the corridors on the second and third floors, facing the Center’s “Light Wall.” Even if you aren’t particularly interested in furniture design, trying out the various seats and finding your favorite corner of the Center for a moment of peace and quiet makes for a fun way of exploring the spacious building. The first video work by an internationally acclaimed contemporary master weaves a grand fiction from real-life surveillance camera footage📹 In addition to video art by Xu Bing @xubingart , a renowned, globally active contemporary artist based in New York and Beijing. Since the 1980s, Xu has been active as one of Asia's leading artists with his iconic works such as Books from the Sky, made by invented 4,000 pseudo-Chinese characters, Square Word Calligraphy, which organizes the letters of each English alphabet into structures that resemble Chinese characters, and Books from the Ground the novel only written by symbols and pictograms. Xu has been active for over 40 years, but this project is his first foray into video. 'Dragonfly Eyes,' tells the poignant love story of a woman named Qing Ting and a man named Ke Fan who suffers unrequited love for her. However, there were no actors or camera crews involved in its making. All the scenes were stitched together from surveillance camera footage freely available on the internet. The angles specific to surveillance cameras, designed to capture as much data as possiblewithin their field of view, and the use of scenesdrawn from real life give this film a rawnesssurpassing that of conventional documentaries. However, the artist fabricated a nonexistent love story through editing and narration. Where does the truth really lie? Perhaps this love story’s essence and its creation’s inevitability reside in this notion of “truth.” 🎞️Showtimes for this film are as below.(81min) 10:20-11:41 / 13:20-14:41 / 15:20-16:41 / 17:20-18:41* *The last screening (17:20-18:41) is available only on Fridays and Saturdays. 📍March 17, we are pleased to present a lecture by Xu Bing, introducing his creative activities. In his first visit to Japan in five years, he will talk about his activities and creations over including the back stories of his first feature film Dragonfly Eyes, which will be exhibited in the "Universal / Remote.” *Chinese-Japanese simultaneous translation available.
