“‘Will little Ugbad be proud of that?’ That’s the basis of how I move through the world in general,” says our March 2026 cover star Ugbad Abdi who was just 18 when she stepped into a profession that puts intense pressure on aesthetics at an age when most are at their most vulnerable. “I think the visibility at first was interesting to navigate because when I started, I was fresh out of high school,” she recalls, thinking back. “I had no idea who I was or what the bigger picture of my identity meant. Over time I learned to just trust myself, and to not look for outside voices to tell me who I should be.”
