So much love is imbued in these recent paintings that I am thrilled to debut at the Art d’Core Gala & PRISM exhibition running through the month of March. I’ll be sharing them here as we gear up for the gala on Saturday!
I began working on this series of paintings early January, inspired by my time in the Philippines this past winter. It was my first time visiting in over 15 years, and I was confronted with both immense grief and joy. Having half your soul live across the ocean is an odd feeling, but this moment of homecoming I could feel it pouring out of me. This particular piece, titled ‘Rooted’ was inspired by a morning on Anguib beach, feeling the joyful memory of the land pulsing through the sand and water beneath me. I incorporated a motif from an Ilocano weaving technique called ‘pinilian,’ where the weft is used to create raised patterns. Back in 2021, my mom gifted me a weaving with this design on it, and I kept envisioning it each laugh I shared with my cousins. Mahal ko ang Pilipinas! :,)
Come see my paintings at the Biltmore Fashion Park and step into these little love portals! <3
