Watched Mortal Kombat 2 last night going in with high hopes because I genuinely want both fighter movies dropping this year to thrive.
Off the bat, MK2 is way better than part one for me in terms of direction, action, and pacing. Focusing heavily on the tournament side of things did two things. The good part is we got almost nonstop action throughout the whole movie.
The downside to that though is it left very little room for the story to really cook. There were a lot of ingredients thrown in to set up future storylines, but because of that, the actual story here felt pushed to the side a bit for the sake of the action.
That being said, I know Mortal Kombat fans are going to appreciate the details in this movie. From the camera framing, iconic stages, cameos, and Easter eggs, you can tell there’s love for the games all throughout it.
The movie definitely feels like a strong setup for what’s next, I just wish this particular story was more fleshed out, especially Kitana’s because she was easily the MVP of the movie for me. Badass presence and she really delivered emotionally in her role too.
Comic relief wise, bringing back Kano was a great choice, and Karl as Cage worked surprisingly well. But again, with Cage it kinda felt like he went from A to Z a little too fast, from nobody to somebody almost instantly.
Cole absolutely SMASHED his fight 🥲
There’s still a lot of characters that need proper justice in the upcoming movies and I really hope we get that, Noob I'm looking at you 😭
If you’re down for action-packed fights, brutal fatalities, and a movie that clearly loves the details from the games, you’ll definitely enjoy this one.
